Every aircraft must only be flown within certified limits of an individual type
to ensure the long-term safety and performance of the aircraft; which means that
the load balance is within the operational envelope of the aircraft, and the Centre
of Gravity (CG) is within a specified range for optimal performance of the aircraft.
There are design limits regarding how much weight the airframe will withstand as
a whole and in a particular compartment, as well as floor limits regarding the weight
per square inch the floor will tolerate. Incorrect loading of cargo could lead to
instability of the aircraft, structural impact and poor fuel efficiency, due to an increased “drag” and can even lead to loss of an aircraft.
This is why the Weight and Balance (W&B) solution assumes great importance because
it governs this critical functionality.
