 Mining for Sustainability conference
Date:January 13 - 14, 2012
Location:Goa, India

At the event, ITC Infotech showcased sustainability management tool for the mining sector.

ITC Infotech demonstrated the tool, 'OptSustain' at the 'Mining for Sustainability Conference' organised by the Federation of Indian Minerals Industries (FIMI) in Goa on January 13th and 14th 2012. Mr. R. Umashankar, Global Practice Head – Centre for Sustainability, ITC Infotech presented a paper on 'ICT's Role in Managing Corporate Sustainability'.

ITC Infotech had launched the first indigenously developed sustainability management and reporting tool 'OptSustain' in November last year. OptSustain is scalable to manage and report all issues related to Sustainable Mining. It’s a web-enabled tool and is independent of geographical position of the mining units. OptSustain’s ability to interface with other business applications like ERP, GIS , Mobile applications etc makes it easily adaptable within the mining industry.

OptSustain has been built based on ITC Infotech’s wide domain expertise and consulting experience. The tool simplifies Sustainability Management within the mining industry. An important value add through OptSustain is the web-enabled access that can be provided to various regulatory body like Ministry of Mines , MoEF , MoRD, state agencies etc. Also, scorecards can be developed to rank mining companies based on their Sustainability Performance.

About Mining for Sustainability Conference

Mining of minerals and other natural resources is critical to human progress. Rightly, therefore, mining is considered to be one of the three wealth creating activities, the other two being farming and manufacturing. However, unlike the manufactured items or agri-produce, most consumers are unable to appreciate the role that mined out resources play in their day-to-day lives. Mining today, and especially in our country therefore has become one of the most misunderstood economic activity.

At the Mining for Sustainability Conference, various facets of sustainability, as relevant to the mining sector, were discussed by renowned experts. The regulatory framework encompassed both mining laws and the environmental and forest laws.. The speakers included a judicious mix of government, industry and NGOs to present a balanced and holistic view.
